Texas Trout Fishing

Here's a picture of my two Texas grandsons, they live in Austin. The Texas Dept. of Fish and Game stock a few rainbows in selected ponds and the boys and their Dad (Bill Jr.) took advantage of the opportunity. They used cheese for bait. Wish I could have joined them. Just check out the smiles on these guys, I think a good time was had by all!!!

These were caught last weekend, by my buddy Mike. Ontario Rainbows.

Softwater Season is Over, Bring on the Ice

Put my boat away for the season, latest I have ever used it. Worst day of the year!

Now I'm getting ready for the ice fishing season, just started ice fishing last season and put some decent gear together. I'm not a huge fan of ice fishing but it's a great way to get out with good freinds and blow the stink off, in other words so I don't go stir crazy. Checked all of my gear and got it ready to go, broke down and picked up a Lowrance X 67c Ice Machine, looking forward to using it and posting a few reports to the blog. Here's a couple of pictures from last year. Click on the pictures to enlarge them.

Here is a recent picture of a buddy ice fishing. And the date on the picture is correct.

Speckled Trout

Thanks to the recent great weather I got out for some trout fishing the last couple of weeks. Mike P. gave me a couple of tips and took me into a couple of small trout lakes that he likes to fish. They weren't on fire but persistance does pay off. In the three trips I got a total of five nice specks, all in zone 18 so they were completely legal fish. No size but nice little stockers. Always amazed at the colouration of these little beauties, and on super light tackle can give a good account of themselves. Invited  a couple for dinner and they were fantastic.
Thanks Mike.

For all the Bowhunters

Used to be an avid bowhunter for some 45 years until I finally stopped hunting a few years ago. Had the use of a great hunting camp about 30 minutes from my house that produced many Deer and a few Black Bear. Here's a picture of the best deer that I took in that area. This guy scored 158 Pope & Young, would have been well over 160 Pope & Young if the main beam on the right side wasn't broken. Hunted him for three years until he finally made a mistake, chasing a doe in the rut. Was my best in 45 years of bowhunting.

The deer below was a Manitoba buck that was estimated to be 12 years old my good buddy Rick Poulin of Canada Goose taxidermy. Rick says he was half blind, half deaf and completely senile, still have a good laugh over that one. Scored 132 Pope & Young.

My only two book deer.

The Mighty Ottawa River (Arnprior) August 14

Monday, August 16, 2010

Have had some trouble accessing this blog for some time so I decided to start all over again. The first post was from earlier in the year and decided to repost to check my settings.

Got out on Saturday with my fishing buddy, grandson Brenden. Decided to try the Ottawa River out of Arnprior for some Walleye and or Muskie. Ended up catching 14 Walleye from 1 to 3.5 lbs. in about 4 hours of fishing. Worked the edges of a submerged point that was at 9 feet of water, the edges of the point dropped anywhere from 18 to 30 feet of water. All walleyes were taken by jigging twister tails tipped with a piece of worm. Also boated a bunch of catfish, polluted with them up there.

Brenden got a little bored with jigging, so he started casting my large Muskie rig, with a Blue Fox tinsel type spinner, and was rewarded for his efforts with a nice fat 36 inch Muskie. He was casting on top of the point in 10 feet of water, and bringing it back to deeper water when the big one hit. His best Muskie so far, I think he`s hooked, was released and swam away none the worst for wear. Will definately give this spot a serious try for Muskie in the near future. Sorry I will have to break down and get a new camera, my Canon gave up the ghost after about 9 years of solid use.
